VA to Invest Millions to Support Homeless Veterans – A New Initiative to Change Lives

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is stepping up to tackle one of the most pressing issues facing our nation’s heroes – veteran homelessness. In a groundbreaking move, the VA has announced plans to allocate hundreds of millions in grants to fund programs and initiatives designed to support homeless veterans across the country. This initiative aims to provide essential resources, including housing, healthcare, and employment services, to help veterans transition back into stable and fulfilling lives.

Additionally, the VA recently announced three key steps to further address veteran homelessness:

  • Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Grants – VA will award hundreds of millions of dollars in the upcoming year to rapidly rehouse veterans, prevent evictions, and secure new housing. Funding will support operations starting October 1, 2025.

  • Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Case Management Grants – Approximately $15 million annually for three years will be allocated to renew existing grants, funding around 120 full-time case manager positions.

  • Mayor’s Pledge to House Homeless Veterans – VA is calling on mayors nationwide to encourage landlords to pledge rental units to veterans in need. This initiative runs through September 30, 2025.

For more details, mayors can visit the Mayor’s Pledge 2024 FAQ to learn more or take the pledge. Additionally, veterans can explore further information about these grant opportunities by visiting VA’s homelessness resources.
